About Niklaus Troxler:

Niklaus Troxler, born in Willisau, Switzerland in 1947, learned his graphic design in Art School of Lucerne and became an art director in Paris. In 1973, he built his own Graphic Design Studio and in 1998 became a professor at Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design in Germany. He is an international graphic designer, design education promoter and organizer of jazz festival.

Troxler organized concerts in Willisau since 1966 and became the Music Director when he created the Jazz Festival Willisau in 1975. He first referred such blues musicians as Champion Jack Dupree, Curtis Jones and Eddie Boyd, and later many pioneer musicians, most of whom attached with the label of Free Jazz.

Since 1970s, most vital musicians were active on the stage. They are Irene Schweizer and Pierre Favre from Switzerland , Alex von Schlippenbach, Peter Kowald and Peter Brötzmann from France, Michel Portal, Bernard Lubat from France, Chris McGregor, John Surman, Mike Westbrook, Mike Osborne and Keith Tippett from the UK, and Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal from Norway. Many important New Jazz representatives of America began to visit the Jazz Festival Willisau one after another, who were Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Archie Shepp, Horace Silver, Pharoah Sanders, Cecil Taylor, John Zorn, etc.

Willisau, where the most famous Jazz Festival in Europe was annually held, became a miniature of jazz movements in the 1970s and an epitome of lively concerts that full of flavors. So far, more than 900 concerts have been organized in Willisau and over 3000 musicians have made their performance.

At the beginning, Niklaus Troxler designed posters both of concerts and music festivals. In the past 30 years, questioning and finding, Troxler worked hard in the field of modern arts of poster and explains its eternal theme with his avant-garde and powerful works, which bring him lots of prizes from home and abroad, and they were also shown in significant exhibitions held by the MOMA, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg,Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Museum of Modern Art, Toyama. Works of his students has a good reputation too.

 

2013年6月7日至7月14日,由华•美术馆主办的“卓思乐爵士设计回顾展”是瑞士籍国际平面设计大师尼古拉斯•卓思乐(Niklaus Troxler)在中国的首次大型个人回顾展。尼古拉斯•卓思乐在上世纪70年代开始组织了欧洲一年一度最负盛名的爵士音乐节—— 维利绍爵士音乐节,并在长达37年的时间里专注投身于爵士节海报的设计,展开了一次次为世人所推崇和赞叹的设计探险和艺术实验,在观者面前呈现出一场视听置换、感官交融的盛会。

尼古拉斯•卓思乐(Niklaus Troxler)1947年出生于瑞士维利绍,从1966年起,他在这个人口不足一万的欧洲小镇上组织爵士音乐会,从1975年开始一手包办为期多天的爵士音乐节。音乐会和音乐节的海报一开始便是由卓思乐设计的。凭借这些海报设计,卓思乐赢得了许多重要的国内与国际设计奖项,他的作品被众多世界著名的博物馆展出或收藏,如纽约现代艺术博物馆、阿姆斯特丹市立博物馆和汉堡艺术与工艺美术博物馆等。

对爵士乐的痴迷是卓思乐设计海报的灵感来源。出生于音乐之家的他,从小就迷上了爵士乐:收听广播里一周一小时的爵士音乐节目,购买每分钟四十五转的爵士乐唱盘,还为见到喜爱的爵士乐手,观赏他们的现场演出欢呼雀跃不已……这些对卓思乐来说,都是非常珍贵的体验和经历。

尽管卓思乐一心想要成为一名平面设计师,从来没有考虑过把音乐当成一种职业——他曾经如此表示过——然而,这份从少年时代就开始沉淀的对爵士乐的挚爱,最终却水到渠成般地演变成敏锐的音乐感悟力,与卓思乐的设计天赋交融共生:他将表现主义、超现实主义、波普艺术、负片造型等表现形式和元素随手拈来,巧妙地运用手中的蜡笔和丝网印刷技术,通过线条变化和色彩构成等手法,将爵士乐中令他着迷的一切音符、旋律、节奏、抽象、即兴和个人表达融入到海报作品的设计当中,最终在海报上营造出一种有如爵士音乐般的自由洒脱,酣畅淋漓之感。不妨说,卓思乐在设计,即是在演奏,他的海报,即是一曲曲可视化的爵士乐。

“卓思乐不算是典型的瑞士平面设计师”,策展人何见平评论道。在他看来,卓思乐的作品中,看不到瑞士编排的传承,看不到整整齐齐的文字版块构成,看不到清晰而适合阅读的无饰线体,看不到若隐若现的网格经营。卓思乐早期的设计作品以插画为主,但在其个人风格娴熟后的大量作品中,文字是其设计的核心元素,他从纯粹的字体设计中获得绘画的体验,在绘画的笔触中雕琢文字的形象。他的风格在自由与秩序之间摇摆不定,一方面,他肆意挥洒着奔放不羁的设计灵感,把玩着不同的艺术表现形式,另一方面,他的作品结构严谨,组织得当。这种风格最终与海报的灵魂——爵士乐相得益彰。

作为一名平面设计师,卓思乐的作品富于创造力,给人印象深刻。爵士海报,这些卓思乐倾注心血近四十载铸就的经典之作,构成了其平面创作中最知名且最关键的部分。展览将展示其在1976-2013年间创作的150幅爵士海报精选之作,以及纪录片和相关文献与图片。通过对经典的回顾、重温和反复仔细地揣摩,让我们发现未来,脚踏实地的前行。

6月7日展览开幕当日,华•美术馆将于下午14:00-17:00在华•艺术沙龙举办D-TALK系列设计论坛第六回,届时参展设计师卓思乐(瑞士)、华•美术馆执行馆长王序(深圳)、策展人何见平(德国)以及设计师、艺术家黄炳培(香港)等重要嘉宾,将就“维利绍爵士节和卓思乐”这一主题进行讨论和对话,同时现场还将播放纪录片《卓思乐的爵士与设计人生》。
